City Strings United's mission is to inspire and challenge children from underserved communities to develop leadership and life skills and a passion for excellence through the discipline of a music ensemble.
City Strings United was founded in 2012 on the belief that access to high-quality youth programs can create positive change in economically-strained communities and foster the social, emotional and educational development of its youth. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit youth development program, City Strings United provides free cello lessons and unique performance opportunities to six through eighteen-year-old students primarily from urban Boston. But we teach our students much more than musical skills. Our focus is on discipline, teamwork, respect, listening and accountability - all attributes that we nurture to develop the whole child.
In March 2020, City Strings United adjusted to the social distancing requirements associated with the Covid-19 pandemic and switched to online cello classes. This meant a larger number of small groups and an emphasis on music literacy and composition. After the spring semester four weeks of online summer classes were offered for all interested students. Our Fall semester began on October 17, 2020.
All five concerts planned for 2020 had to be cancelled. As soon as it is feasible to begin scheduling performances, we shall do so.
